Duchies of Men

Faction Identity

The Shattered Duchies of Aethelmar, commonly known as the Duchies or the Human Kingdoms, represent the fractured remnants of humanity's once-great empire. Their capital of Ironhelm, built upon the ruins of the old Imperial seat, stands as a fortress-city of 200,000 souls, a bastion of human civilization surrounded by three massive walls, each added after successive wars proved the previous defenses insufficient. The Duchies' military doctrine centers on combined arms warfare: disciplined infantry formations of pike and halberd working in concert with devastating longbow volleys, while their heavy cavalry, the Knights of the Realm in full plate armor astride armored warhorses, deliver crushing charges that can shatter enemy lines. This martial tradition, born from centuries of desperate warfare, has transformed every citizen into a potential soldier and every settlement into a fortification.

Historical Overview

The Duchies are the fractured remnants of humanity's greatest achievement, the Empire of Aethelmar. Once, they ruled Ashenfell with iron roads, mighty fortresses, and legions that could shake the earth. The Sundering changed everything.

When the Empire collapsed, twelve dukes claimed their territories as independent kingdoms. What followed was 50 years of civil war brother against brother, each claiming legitimacy as the "true" Empire. By the time the Orc invasions began, humanity was too divided to resist effectively.

Now, seven Duchies remain, bound by the Treaty of Blood Pact, an uneasy alliance forged in desperation. They fight as one against external threats, but old grudges simmer beneath every banner. The dream of reunification haunts every duke, but none dare spark another civil war while enemies surround them.

Culture and Society

Military Tradition: Every able-bodied citizen owes military service. Boys train with sword and spear from age 12. The Duchies' armies are disciplined, well-equipped, and bitter. They fight not for glory, but because defeat means extinction.

Technology: Masters of metallurgy and siege warfare. Their blacksmiths forge the finest steel in Ashenfell. Their engineers build fortress-cities with walls 50 feet thick. Their cannons, primitive but devastating, herald a new age of warfare.

Faith: The Duchies worship the Ancestral Throne, a belief that the spirits of fallen soldiers guide the living. Before battle, warriors pray to their grandfathers, seeking strength from those who died defending the realm.

Social Structure: Rigid feudalism. Dukes command barons, barons command knights, knights command men-at-arms. Mobility is rare but possible, valor on the battlefield can elevate a peasant to knighthood.

Current Status

Holding the line. The Duchies control the central heartlands, fortified, defensible, but slowly losing ground. Orc warbands raid their borders. Elven ranger companies strike supply lines. Internal tensions threaten to explode into civil war.

Duke Harren Ironfist of Ironhelm holds the alliance together through force of will, but he's old and has no heir. When he dies, the Duchies may shatter once more.

They fight on, because surrender means annihilation.
